What values, skills and passions do you have?
This is important because these may fit in with your career goals. For example, if you are driven, motivated and target focused a sales role might be for you. It can be difficult to find an immediate connection, however, think of your key values, skills and passions and then you can find a correlation between them. You may surprise yourself with the results!
Do you have a current role?
If so, what do you enjoy the most? This is one of the easiest ways to determine what you can take into your next role. For example, if you are in marketing and you prefer working on social media than doing ad campaigns and SEO, then you may want a mix of digital marketing and communications in your next role. Apply your current skills to the potential of a new role, this will give you additional skills that you can obtain in meaningful work.
Keep your options open:
Your interests can change over time, so don’t shut down new opportunities so quickly. If you have stayed in the same or similar role for so many years then it can be scary making a change. This also goes for stepping up from an executive role to a managing role or similar. Also, look for meaning in other ways, this can be volunteering or hobbies.
What does meaningful mean to you?
When thinking about a role, make sure you are looking for growth and security. You spend a lot of time at work, so it’s important you are happy there, and a key to work happiness is sustaining development.
Work security does not mean how likely you are to lose your job, but how much you want to secure it. if your job and work environment are purpose-filled and meaningful, then you are more likely to stay and be open to development. It’s important to know this for your new role or it can cause burn out.
Do not always consider the money:
If money was not an issue, but you still had to work for a living, what would you do? The answer to this question will provide you with direction and an insight into what type of work would be deeply meaningful and fulfilling for you. This does not mean you have to tap into your passions exactly, but It should tap into or relate in some way. You will progress further in your role if your talents meet!
Work on growing yourself:
Grow your skills set, research new opportunities before applying and prepare yourself for any path you ultimately choose. Why is this important and relevant? Because you become more resourceful and increasingly likely to be successful for the career you pursue when you put in the time and effort to developing yourself.
