So how should you tailor your CV to a role?

Tailoring your CV can be super difficult if you aren’t sure of the right way to do it. However, it’s actually a fairly quick and easy adjustment, that could make a huge difference to your job search!

In order to stand out to recruiters, a tailored CV is the way to go! It not only shows that you’re interested in their job, but also allows you to prove your suitability for the role in the early stages.

Your tailored CV will also give you a good head start when preparing for interview questions. Interview questions are normally based off of your relevant experience and skills on your CV. Therefore, you can compare the experience and skills in the job description to your relevant experience and skills and start prepping for some of the questions they might ask you! (More on this topic coming soon!)

So, how do you actually tailor a CV?

👉 Start with an outline CV - create a basic CV with all the relevant information on it & break it down into categories (work experience, qualifications etc). This allows you to have a good starting template to build on and helps to make sure nothing is forgotten about.

👉 Opening paragraph – if you have an opening paragraph, it is always a good idea to add what you’re looking for and why into it. This not only helps to incorporate your keywords into your CV, but also gives the employer a bit more of an insight into what you’re looking for and why.

👉 Check the job description - what are they looking for that you can offer? Maybe it's sales experience or even just transferrable skills. Either way, make sure you make these points clear on your CV (especially any relevant previous experience).

👉 Look for keywords in the job description - screening software and recruiters will search candidates by keywords in their CV. The more relevant keywords you have, the better.

Some great keywords to have relating to sales (depending on your experience) would be: customer service, B2B, B2C, communication.
