First Time Job Hunting

Job Hunting Ipswich

First Time Job Hunting

As we approach September and “back to school” time, what about the school leavers? There is a whole mob of school and college leavers who will be job hunting for the very first time and it can be very daunting.

Here are our tips for those first time job hunters:

Know what you want

It might seem obvious, but having some clarity around what your ideal job looks like really can make job hunting easier. It will allow you to narrow down and focus your search which will save A LOT of time.

Write your CV

Sounds simple? But it can be quite challenging when you have little to no work experience. Our advice here is to elaborate on any extra-curricular activities and responsibilities such as sports clubs, or awards. You want your CV to stand out from the others and by highlighting these experiences you will show potential employers you have skills that may be valuable to them.

Use Social Media

If you’re looking for an office-based role, LinkedIn is a must. Create a LinkedIn profile and fill in as much detail as possible. Remember to keep it professional. Make connections with businesses that you might like to work for and keep an eye out for any suitable positions that come up.

What to wear?

Make sure you have an interview outfit ready for when you get that all exciting interview request.  It doesn’t have to be super smart (most offices are much more smart casual nowadays) but it might be worth asking about the dress code or doing a bit of research to make sure you get it right.

The Interview

We know it’s easier said than done, but try and stay calm and relaxed.  Make sure you do your interview prep and arrive a few minutes early, this will definitely help to calm your nerves.  Take of copy of your CV to refer to, and a portfolio if relevant.

Finally . . . if you need help, why not speak to a local recruitment agency, they may be able to offer advice and knowledge of the local job market.
