How to Onboard Staff Effectively
It is speculated that around 30% of candidates have backed out of a job after accepting it, before they are due to start. It is really costly to a business, because you will have put a lot of time into advertising and interviewing. For a candidate to back out at this stage would be such a shame.
In this blog post we share some tips about how to ‘seal the deal’ quickly and get a candidates’ acceptance, and also how to avoid them backing out by having a great onboarding process.
Act quickly when offering
Make sure that you have got some time in your diary shortly after your final interviews, so that you can make a decision quickly. Once you have made a decision, pick up the phone to make the offer, and let the successful candidate know that they are the one that you want to hire.
Give out important information
Give out important information
It is important to communicate why you have accepted them and what they did that really made them stand out during the interview process. Cover the benefits and specifics that they are going to receive when they join you. Let them know how delighted you are that they have accepted, so that they really feel your excitement as well.
Colleague involvement
A few days after accepting the offer, ask a colleague to reach out to the candidate. It will give them a buddy on the inside for day one. They can talk to them about what to expect when they join and give them an opportunity to ask any questions that they might have. The candidate might be feeling nervous and this will give them an opportunity to put their mind at ease.
Check in during their notice period
Usually a candidate will have a notice period or a few weeks off before they are due to start their new role. It is a really good idea to check in on them to ask how their notice period is going and to give them another opportunity to ask questions to help them settle their nerves before they start their new job.
Prepare for their first day
Put some time aside to make sure that all the equipment is set, that the training and induction is set. Consider things such as what are they going to do for lunch on their first day? It is a great opportunity to spend some time with their new colleagues. An employee is only new once and as an employer, you can really use their first day to show them that you really value them working for you.
