New Year, New Job?
We decided to look at the benefits of job searching this January. A New Year gets us thinking about change and new resolutions. It marks a fresh start for us, in many ways, one of those being a change in workplace, career or industry.
Why January:
There are certain times of the year that are more efficient than others in regards to applying for jobs. January/ February is a great time for being hired, this is because most industries are looking. January will usually start slowly as everyone is settling back into work, however, don’t let this put you off.
By the second week of the month, jobs will usually be advertised fast. A lot of decision makers are in the office this time of year, which is a benefit because you will most likely find the process of interviews and a confirmation on whether you have the job quicker than usual as companies want you to get started almost straight away.
Companies tend to forecast their spending’s for the year or next few months in January, this money is usually spent on hiring activity.
In the meantime:
As most companies will be recruiting a couple of weeks into January, use the first couple of weeks in January to your advantage, and start a fresh CV. Remember to make your CV so it reflects not only the type of jobs that you are looking for, but also the person you are. January is when the iron is hot, employers and recruiters will feel more inclined to give your CV a look over, so make sure you’re giving them a good reason to look over it. Also, take this break to think about what you truly want out of your new job: is it a new challenge, a higher salary, to have a job closer to you. Whatever it may be, figure out the most important factors as to why you want this new job so you know it’s right for you.
Top tip! Grammar- it may seem obvious, yet it could be the reason why your CV has not won anyone over just yet. Firstly, read over it carefully and make any corrections, then get a second and third person to look over it so you can be sure there are no mistakes.
Application:
Remember not to be too rash with your decisions and apply for any job. This can be easily done with many new opportunities facing you. There’s no point applying for jobs and when it comes to the interviewing process it’s not for you, it’s about being realistic with every aspect. It would benefit you more to apply for a few and tailor your CV to that company rather than throwing out the same CV to all employers.

However, employers appreciate January is a chance to have a career in something they have never tried before, and some employers actually like to take the time to upskill people if they see talent.
Here are 4 useful tips to add to your CV if you have no experience and would like a different career change.
Research- one of the most important factors with any job, however, more so if you’re looking for a career change. Thoroughly researching the industry will show you are keen and serious about the change. You can also try shadowing someone in the meantime first hand to show you have had exposure to the industry.
Evaluate- once you have learnt the industry, you can begin to confidently pull together some points on what makes you the most suitable candidate, it’s about demonstrating what you know, and what you can bring to the table.
