Sometimes it’s difficult to set candidates apart and choose the right one, however hiring someone that is not as interested as another candidate can be a mistake that will cost your company in the long run. Here are some sure signs that you are interviewing a genuinely interested candidate.

They have a clear idea of what is expected:

This isn’t about a candidate throwing a job description at you, this is about genuine knowledge of what the role entails. It’s all well and good someone reading the job description back to you, but you want someone to go between those fine lines and bring their experiences and skills to the role. An interested candidate would describe what they see their typical working day being.

There’s a genuine enthusiasm:

When interviewing candidates, there will always be one or two that will stand out the most. This is because they know what to expect and they are still interested to join your company. Are they keen to join you on the future of your company? Someone that is serious about the development of your brand and is enthusiastic about it will shine through.

Top Tip! Ask candidates what your company values are and see how they feel about them, if they identify them straight away, they are serious about joining your company.

They are prepared:

It stands out when a candidate has done their homework. When you ask the question “tell me about what we do?” do they know enough to impress you with their knowledge? This is where they can demonstrate to you the they have taken to research your company.

They have contributed ideas to the business:

In addition to conducting their own research and making suggestions for improvements, the best candidates would have suggested potential directions for their role/the business to go in, should they get the job. This doesn’t necessarily mean improvements but additional work and projects the company can pursue to achieve their aims.

They ask interesting questions:

When it comes to the end of the interview this is when you really get to know your candidates, the best questions are the ones that are well thought out. Look out for questions on where the business is heading and how the candidate might progress with this equally. Questions on the role and not on salary or holiday etc show the candidate wants the job for the right reasons.

The interview flows:

Interviews with great candidates will always have a drive in the conversation, this is a natural back and fourth flow. This indicates they know what they want and they try and prove this to you instead of giving blunt answers.

Top Tip! Notice if you feel like you can’t wait to look forward to working with them before you have given a job offer. This is a great sign!
