What to Wear to an Interview
What to wear to an interview:
This blog will discuss…
- Why first impressions count
- How preparation matters
- Our ideas on what to wear to look smart
- Hair and jewellery is a significant factor
When going for a job interview you have no other intention than giving the interviewer the best impression of you, right? How you dress for the occasion is therefore a significant factor, so the importance of looking the best version of yourself should never be underestimated.
When you arrive for your interview you will have an instant opinion on the interviewer, and they will have one on you before you have even said a word. First impressions count and this is why it’s crucial to dress to impress. Remember it’s not about ‘standing out from the crowd’ it’s about being smart, showing your professionalism and demonstrating your personality.
Before you attend your interview do your research! This will help you to build up an impression of the company, their culture and an appropriate dress code for the interview. Top tip– look at the ‘about us’ page on the company website, or the company social media pages, you can see what employees are wearing and even replicate their style!
Being prepared is never a bad idea. This is not just preparing your interview questions, the answers to questions or even knowing the history of the company. Figuring out what to wear and getting it organised the night before your interview will be one less thing for you to think about on the day.
Hair and Jewellery keep the accessories to a minimum, this applies to everyone, especially you ladies; it’s always quality over quantity! It’s okay to wear jewellery, but try to accessorise appropriately; wearing one or two carefully thought out jewellery items. If you are offered the job then there may be more leeway in how you can accessories. Long hair can be distracting if left down, particularly when nervous, so it is advisable to tie it up or wear it in an updo style. Short hair can be styled in many ways, however, make sure it doesn’t hide your smile!
The outfit that works for almost every interview
The safe bet:
Men– Dress appropriately for the position you have applied for. In most cases, this means a smart suit rather than dressing down (if in doubt it is usually best to go for a suit), and polished shoes is never a bad idea. Avoid bold colour as this can be distracting, so a neutral coloured tie and socks combination makes sense. Remember being smart characterizes your personality in a positive way.
Women– undoubtedly women have more flexibility in how they can dress for an interview, this can cause advantages and disadvantages. From our interview experience, we would go for something safe but elegant such as black trousers and a blouse, an appropriate skirt and top or dress can also be an option. As always keep it suitable and smart so you’re giving that positive impression as soon as you walk in. Whether you wear heels or flat shoes is up to you, it’s about making sure it gives the right impression.
