Bad things happen, there’s no getting around that. It doesn’t matter how good of a person you are or how great you are at what you do, it will happen. This perception could not be truer when something goes wrong at work or at an interview, read on to find out why.

First of all, you have to ask yourself what went wrong, whether you said the wrong thing in an interview or had a hiccup up in a presentation at work, ask yourself these two questions.

  • Why did this happen?
  • What does it mean to me now and in the future?
Why your response matters:

Our response to these questions will determine your success, which is where resilience comes in. how you deal with a situation that you can not control says a lot about your character. For example, you didn’t get that dream job? how do you deal with it? Of course, there will be anger, confusion and upset if you put your all in. However, ask the interviewer or recruiter for feedback so you can improve for your next interview, look at questions you couldn’t answer as strongly as others and work on these. This is where YOU are challenging to change yourself.

Consider the person you will like to be:

Thinking about the person you would like to be, especially in the areas which you struggle with. For example, if you receive criticism this is not necessarily a bad thing, it’s there to help you to improve. Therefore, instead of reacting negatively, take time to develop a clear vision of how you will overcome this criticism to improve yourself for the future.

Observe the outcome of your reactions:

How you react to situations will determine the outcome of the situation. Therefore, if you are faced with a challenge or a less than ideal situation you have ways to deal with this. Pay close attention to the results when you take the appropriate actions. By staying positive, you will be motivated to continuously do better.

Learn a more compassionate approach to yourself:

No one is perfect, and personal changes takes effort and time to accomplish so it’s important to support this process within yourself. Think of a time something has gone wrong at work, and you have been too critical on yourself. It undermines your efforts for the rest of the day by being too hard on yourself rather than learning from it. So instead, practise on being understanding and patient with yourself- speak to yourself like you would a good friend who is developing themselves.
